SUNY Cortland Community Bike Project

Website

http://www2.cortland.edu/about/sustainability/community-bikes/

The Idea

The Community Bike Project wants to increase cycling on campus and reduce vehicle congestion. We want to incorporate more education and events to get students on bikes. Cycling is a lifelong activity that is so beneficial in many ways.

The Specifics

The Community Bike Project holds bicycle donation drives. We refurbish the bikes and turn them into Yellow Bikes. They are free to students, faculty, and staff on campus to check-out and ride across campus. We continually receive donated bikes. The funds would be used toward the paint and parts it takes to refurbish a bike.

As a cycling-bus-riding commuter, it seems important that our students see the ease with which low-impact commuting is possible -- and the right place to begin is while they're still on campus! Moving around our long, skinny campus can be easily done when the Community Bikes are out and available, so keeping them in repair and making more of them available is a necessary commitment in the supply-demand equation for success. Please help keep the yellow bikes moving!! --DaveR, reference librarian
