The Idea

The idea of The Bike Kitchen is to refurbish old bicycles and scraps and turn them into fully functioning bicycles. This will be done with the use of volunteers with the majority of the tools and old bikes donated by local agencies and corporation. Turning scraps into treasures to aid others.

The Specifics

$1000 would greatly help us set up our workshop and space and turn it into something suitable for volunteers to work in. We have space available now in an old loading dock of a Lowes behind the Christiansburg Recreation Center. The money can also be used to buy old bicycles and refurbishing tools and supplies to make them functional. The overall goal is to serve the 19% of the population in Montgomery County in Virginia who live below the poverty line. They have limited access to transportation and this is not beneficial to them because most are isolated. Transportation has proven to lower the cost of groceries, healthcare, childcare, and increase education opportunities.

Sounds like a wonderful idea! You should get a raise for thinking this up! Also, this might work in the UP , too. They have a terrible economy up there and could sure use some help. GOOD LUCK !!!

Yes we have a deal in place with the police to receive abandoned and confiscated bicycles. Thank you for your suggestion!

Any thoughts on getting the bikes that are at the VT auction? Bikes often abandoned on campus, tagged to confirm that no one is using and collected at the end of an academic year. I think parking services is the one that coordinates that effort.
